The Heights History
The Heights neighborhood in Jersey City has a rich history, dating back to its days as part of the Pavonia colony in New Netherland, where the Van Vorst family was a prominent figure. The oldest building in Hudson County, a Van Vorst House built in 1742, is located on Palisade Avenue. Summit Avenue, located slightly to the west, follows an old Hackensack Indian trail that became a main road connecting the villages of Communipaw and Bergen, and later the Paterson and Hackensack Plank Roads. The first mayor of Hudson City, E.R.V Wright, was also from this neighborhood.
In the early 20th century, before Hollywood became the center of the American motion picture industry, New Jersey towns along the Hudson River were a hub of film production. Among these towns was Jersey City Heights, which was home to a branch of the French film company Pathé, the largest film equipment and production company in the world. The Pathé American studio and factory were established in the Heights in 1910 and produced popular comedies, dramas, and newsreels largely directed at the US market. The studio's subsidiary, the Eclectic Film Company, was responsible for the worldwide success of the film "Perils of Pauline", the first American-made Pathé production.
